In our first session, my vocal coach quickly identified some key issues - my tendency to swallow the sound, for example - which were less flaws with my vocal apparatus, and more simple problems of confidence and approach. Taking on his adjustments, I saw immediate improvements in my vocal quality. We worked hard for those two months, and the show was a great success - mission accomplished! But really that was just the beginning of the story... My coach made me believe - as he did - that I could aim higher than simply “good enough for the show”. He helped me understand my voice: its range, its power, and most important of all - its character. I had walked into his studio as an unrefined cover band vocalist, aiming at little more than imitating the singers of the songs we performed - and over the next two years, under my coach’s tutelage, I grew into a singer. As you build your confidence in singing, it is best that you find a private space as you nurture your callow voice.
